New Scene! War Stories (Part 2 of 2)

Page 100

And now, the conclusion to “War Stories”. It clocks in at seven pages, a bit longer than the first part.

While I’d hoped to get this one finished and posted in January, I’m just happy that I’ve been able to work on it and complete it. Still working on getting my posture up to snuff. I’ve had to rig up some interesting widgets in the studio to help keep me sitting up straight. I ended up inking this entire scene by taping the pages to a scrap sheet of melamine-coated shelving, which I could prop up in my lap or on my drawing desk to minimize the amount of leaning over I needed to do in order to draw without aggravating anything in my neck and back. Also, I often use my iPad to look at reference material while inking, so I set it up on a music stand to make it easier to see without looking down too much.

My new drawing board.

My new drawing board.

As you can see in the photo, I’m not above printing out references on paper, either. In this case, I was letting the artwork of Goseki Kojima from “Lone Wolf and Cub” to influence my execution of the forest backgrounds on Page 103. A bonus feature of the drawing board is that I can stick pieces of paper under the taped-down page and have them close at hand so I don’t have to look far to see what I need. It worked out very, very well.

Anyway, enough ado! Go read “War Stories – Part Two”!

The January Update that Wasn’t

Hey, folks. I owe you an update. I promised you a new scene in January, and look, here it is February 1st, and no new PS. What gives? When I got back from the holidays, I had a script and thumbnails and was ready to start pencilling away. However, a couple of things happened that got in the way.

Firstly, I’ve been spending more time wearing my Illustrator hat this month as a few pleasantly unexpected projects landed in my lap about mid-month. Of course, this interrupted the time I was going to spend inking and finishing out the end of “War Stories.”

Secondly, I’m sad to report I’ve been fighting some complications from my neck injury last year. Happily, I can still work, just not very fast. I had a flare-up last week which has been limiting the amount of time I can spend at the drawing desk each day. I’ve gone back to treatment, and prospects are good. Rest easy. I am doing everything I can to take care of myself.

I’m just sorry it means a bit more delay. I should have a better idea when the new scene will post next week.

As always, thanks for your unending patience.

New Scene! War Stories (Part 1 of 2)

Page 95

Nothing like a little tension building by way of distraction. Kate finally gets her War Story out of Mike. This is the first half of a bigger scene. Part 2 to come in mid-January, once I’ve come back from the Holiday stupor.

Work is going smoothly again. Still pacing myself to avoid any lingering symptoms, but finding a groove, now. Getting back to juggling illustration work and comics again, and it feels good.

I’m looking forward to putting in more studio time now that I’m healthy again, and will be clearing my convention appearance calendar for the next several months at least until I finish up the production for this book. So this means I won’t be appearing at a number of my usual haunts like Anime Boston or Anime Central this spring. I’d rather conserve my energy for creating the artwork and story for now and re-emerge with something new in hand once it’s actually ready, instead of forcing myself to rush out a book that isn’t quite ready in order to satisfy the arbitrary convention cycle. I know this is the better way to go.

Anyway, Happy Holidays, everyone! I’ll see you next month with Part 2 of this scene.
