Mike’s apartment is based on an old brownstone I lived in when I first moved into Chicago from the suburbs. The city is covered in buildings like this one, which were constructed in the early 20th century to house the middle class. The interiors are usually filled with hardwood loors, original wood trim and plaster & lath walls. I recreated my entire apartment in SketchUp to work out camera angles for this scene.
In the second panel, Kate has gotten to know the plaster. The damaged wall reveals the lath, which is used to hold the plaster in place. I also got to know this construction material when my wife and I bought our first house, and my father helped me gut a room built with a shoddier version of this stuff.
