In the top panel I originally drew the buildings in the furthest bits in the background. But, when I finally got to the end I thought they were cluttering the composition, so I turned them into gray gradients.

I kind of like it. I can imagine the vagueness is due to the diffusion of incoming sunlight, or maybe even a dissipating early morning fog.
