Is this the first appearance of Captain Hughes? I discovered your comic a few hours ago, and have read about half way through part three, but have not been reading the author’s notes consistently.
I noticed Hughes resemblance to Gregory Hines right away, but didn’t notice his name was “Ray Hughes” until much later, then went back to see if you had remarked on it in your notes.
“Running Scared” is one of my favorite movies; it came out when I was spending three months in exile in Oklahoma City, and I watched the movie several times just because it felt like home. But it’s a good movie, anyway.
Thanks for a great strip.

Yup, this is first appearance. He’s only mentioned in the previous scene.
Hughes: “This one has your name written all over it. The file clerk has a case of OCD…”
“Hell, she wouldn’t stop writing your name simply because the letters weren’t straight enough.”
Subverting as many tropes as possible? Me gusta.
