New Scene – News Flash (Part 1 of 2)

Page 108 Hey, folks! First part of a much longer scene, here. This one took a little longer than expected, mostly due to unplanned illustration work that’s been coming my way. Also, I wanted to make sure I roughed out the entire scene before I went back to do the inks and finishing work. I’m not going to promise that the next update will be quicker in coming, though. There’s another 10 pages to go, yet.

My neck is doing well, at least. Not quite back to drawing full-time, and there are still good days and bad, but all in all it’s healing, even if it’s going slower than I would like. I will say that doing daily yoga stretching and exercise is helping a great deal.

Also, in the spirit of full disclosure, I should mention that in addition to doing illustration work as it comes in, I’m also going to be dividing my time this summer on a side-project with Batman Strikes writer Russell Lissau called STRANGER, that will be appearing in an upcoming issue of Omega Comics Presents. It’s a cute story of a girl who goes to school in space, so think Star Trek meets Miyazaki. It’s my first foray into all-ages comics, and I’m really excited to have a chance to try some new things with it.

Don’t worry, I’ll post some preview stuff here as I can. However, if you don’t hear from me, it’s not because I’m dead. I just don’t like to constantly post to the world that nothing big is happening at the moment (yes, I think that must be in violation of one of the basic rules of the social internet these days, but that’s just how it goes). I will share when there is something worth sharing.

Again, thank you guys so much for your patience!

Glad to hear recovery is going well, if slowly. Congratulations on the additional work, as well.

As usual, very good addition to the current story. I’m looking forward to the next part.

  2. Dawg says:

Hey nice pic.by the way dou you know why alpha luna hasn’t been updating since september?

  3. Steve says:

Keep us posted on your new projects. Stranger sounds like it will be great!

Thanks for understanding. I’ve also been doing some work for some musicians, including the Steampunk band “The Extraordinary Contraptions”, and just picked up another gig designing and illustrating a kid’s album. Also a lot of portrait work has been coming my way, including a possible piece of public art for a park.

So, yeah. Things have been pretty busy for me so far this year. I love PS, but it has been really nice to stretch my art wings a bit in some new directions lately.

Thankfully my neck is cooperating for the most part.

  4. NightWolf says:

Hope you enjoy the work on the new project, awesome work on the new PS pages.

  5. Moitaznur says:

Perhaps it’s just me, but the Ink reader keeps getting stuck on this page. Any idea why?

    • Matthew says:

      I’m getting the same problem.

    • Slamlander says:

Because there hasn’t been an update since?

      • dirk says:

Sorry, I’m in illustration land right now. Have to finish a couple of projects before I get back to PS.

Check back in a month or so.

Yes, I know this is unfair, but that is just how it has to be right now.

      • Moitaznur says:

It wasn’t meant to be another “where’s the new stuff” post. I just didn’t know he updated in chunks, nor that such updates would break the site’s last button and the Ink reader.

  6. Slamlander says:

Are you getting back to this anytime this year?

    • David says:

How much have you paid for this?

Medical bills are (still) expensive, and paying work with deadlines comes before paying work without deadlines, which comes before non-paying work. A free comic falls in the non-paying work category most of the time.

You may not have meant to sound rude, but the way you phrased your question sounded like you felt entitled to an update of the comic. Enough comments like this can convince an artist to drop the project because it is no longer enjoyable and does not pay the bills.

      • Dan the Ninja says:

It’s been nearly four months without even so much as a “I’m working on it.” At what point are we allowed to question whether or not that’s already happened?

  7. Hey Dirke,

Good to see the comic is still coming out, and loving the updates you’ve been posting on facebook for some of the other projects you are working on.

I’m done with conventions this year (only did a handful, because I’m getting married in 30+ days), but looking forward to seeing you at a show next year!

  8. Shamus says:

    You alive, Dirk?

    • Carl says:

Dirks still very alive dude. He’s doing some project right now. He said he’ll be back to paradigm shift as soon it’s done.

  9. SpeakingRain says:

I found a cool new webcomic that’s helping me bide the time until Dirk returns to us. Thought you guys might appreciate it. http://www.thelegendoftheforgottenisle.wordpress.com
