I generally draw in the characters first, then rough in the backgrounds around them.* However, in the first and second panels I did the opposite, placing the characters in the scene once the backgrounds were more or less determined.

Unlike some artists, I generally don’t shoot for tight pencils, especially in the roughs. I make most of my final decisions in the inking phase instead.
*This really doesn’t show I how I go about drawing characters or architecture. I’ll just have to tackle those in future tutorials.
