Story comes first. One doesn’t avoid certain plot elements simply because it’s been done; that would be just as bad as including something simply because it IS the norm.

Every male-female partner/duo out there is always “sexual tension” and while I know that’s popular and it makes for page-turners, I keep waiting for one that just isn’t. Maybe paradigm shift can be that one. Buck the trend!
It’d be like a Newbery winner *without* the sick uncle/friend/dog dying in the end.
