Calm, rational, and almost unnaturally cool under pressure, Mike is an oddball foil for Kate. Where she’s the fire, he’s the ice. A self-described cynic, he manages to hold his own against Kate’s scathing wit with his own brand of zen wisecracks. But, despite their contrasting natures, they make an extraordinary team. Unbeknownst to her, Mike really cares about his younger, less experienced partner, though he doesn’t express it openly.
While not truly paranoid, Mike subscribes to a fair amount of conspiracy theory. Due to his experiences in the Gulf War, he no longer trusts the federal government, greatly favoring police work over covert operations.
He has also trained for several years as a martial artist, and belying his typically calm exterior, Mike is a terror in hand to hand combat. His training allows him to expertly wield nearly any weapon from broken bottles to pool cues to heavy artillery. And when push comes to shove, he’s not afraid to use brute force.
Mike was an army brat. During his childhood he considered himself lucky if he stayed in one place for more than a year at a time. As a teenager, Mike lived in Hong Kong. To keep himself off the streets, he began studying Wing Chun Kung Fu and it became his obsession. Mike ignored everything else for it, including his studies. Eventually he was winning tournament after tournament, but he realized it wasn’t satisfying anymore. So, he returned to the states and after stumbling between dead-end jobs, he decided to join the army.
After boot camp his test scores propelled him into the open arms of the U.S. Special Forces, and Mike soon found himself fighting in a war that he didn’t necessarily agree with. After the war he left the army as soon as he had a chance for “personal reasons.” After another aimless period, he joined the police, ending up in the S.W.A.T. unit. After several successful, but unfullfilling years there, he wound up in Violent Crimes, discovering his unique experiences gave him an edge. Ever since teaming up with Kate, Mike now finds he’s happier than he’s ever been.
